I love every time I hear that phrase. As the title of this blog suggests, I am very new to NYC--as in, I arrived yesterday. My impression of it so far: wonderful.
If you don't know me, you're probably wondering, who the heck is this chick? Well, to give you the rundown, I'm from Idaho, I went to school in Utah, and now that I've graduated (English majors unite!) I have packed my little bags and headed for the big city. Why would I go so far away from beautiful Idaho? It's simple--publishing. If Boise were a grand center for the publishing world, I probably would have stayed. But I'm sure that I will enjoy many visits to Boise in the future, because Idaho really is a pretty place.
I took a red-eye flight (since those are nice and cheap) and I arrived yesterday morning. Funnily enough, one of my friends was asking me last week how to get over jet lag. I told her, don't go to sleep until night time, and do some exercise. Of course, I had to take my own advice when I got here. It was easier to stay awake when I was outside, so I walked through the Inwood park, which is close to where I'm staying. I bought some groceries--food is definitely more expensive than in Utah and Idaho. I think I'll be eating lots of beans and rice, but I don't have a problem with that.
So far, I have applied to some jobs and done a lot of walking. But how else is one supposed to get to know NYC? Today, I walked through Central Park. I'm reading The Catcher in the Rye, and he mentions thinking about a lagoon in the southern part of the park. I found it! Granted, it is fairly large, so it's hard to miss. I felt kind of cool, walking there with my Catcher in the Rye in my hand. Later on, I took a stroll through Little Italy. Oh yeah, I lived in Italy for a year and a half, so I have this kind of obsession for Italian things, mostly their food. I saw a bunch of restaurants, but I wanted to find a cheese shop! I think they must be scattered around NYC, but I was really hoping that I could pick up some fresh mozzarella. Now I know, always google search before going out.
Oh, and it's a good thing that I like humidity. Although, today my shirt had a wet stripe down the front and back from where my sidebag strap was. Kind of gross, but hey, nobody here knows me yet, so who cares! I'll try to keep my adventures posted on here as well as any success I have with the job hunt. The goal is to eventually be an editor. I already did an internship in Utah, but I may start out doing another one here. And in the meantime, I'll write.
Stay tuned for more of my exploits!
Bethany,

Thanks Aunt Jean!
ReplyDeleteOkay I am just now realizing you're living in New York haha. I wanted to go there for editing too. Sounds fun. But I thought your ultimate goal was to be a writer, not an editor. Or is that the ultimate ultimate goal? hah. Have fun! How do you like your ward?
ReplyDeleteI would do either, writing or editing, or both! I don't want to put too many eggs in one basket, if you know what I mean. Besides, they each help the other. Editing helps my writing, and writing helps my editing. Besides, if I could get paid to basically read books and make them better, I'd be down for that in a heartbeat! And New York is a fun place to be anyway.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the Harlem ward, and it's great! Though, my roommate and I have yet to arrive on time. We keep forgetting that the metro stop by our apartment is closed on the weekends, and we end up having to walk to one further away. There are some people that really like that I'm from Idaho :)
